The Four Sisters Boatel - Out and Around in Tollcross and Morningside
Edinburgh is very much a seasonal city, the buzz in the summer is like nothing you know unless you experience it yourself and i must say i have been completely spoilt having the privilege of spending my entire life growing up in this exciting and ever changing city which yet manages to hold its own identity so close to the peoples hearts. The Old town is like stepping into a time-warp throwing you back to the early 20th century the Grassmarket with the old cobbles lanes leading down close's past dimly lit pubs with the smell of ale and home cooked haggis neeps and tatties radiating. Finding the perfect place to nip in for a dram and a scran is not difficult, many also tempt you in with local bands playing live music. Sunshine you may think is rare in Scotland however this may be true for our friends on the West coast of Scotland but in Edinburgh i believe we could be worse off, and when the sun is out woah we do do make the most of it. There are some stunning parks in Edinburgh Princess street gardens are located right in the City centre along one whole side of Princes Street which makes it an ideal place to stroll, away from the traffic and in the beautiful back garden of Edinburgh Castle. The Meadows is also a stunning space located between Tollcross and Newington where you will find more Edinburgh locals with disposable barbecues, cricket sets, badminton games, even golf clubs to have a few rounds on the putting green! One of my favorite days in Edinburgh is spent meandering from Toll cross to Morningside, through the shops restraunts and bars. There are some great bars and hidden gems in this area alongside The Meadows. TUK TUK is a popular Indian street-food restaurant, The Blackbird bar in Tollcross has a fantastic beer garden which is a lovely sun trap on a summers day, with a frequently changing menu the food is always great and the best part is they are dog friendly serving the dogs a bowl of water and a treat upon arrival! Hoochie coochie is a quirky fashion/ lifestyle shop. independently The owner is a lovely eccentric man who has spent his life perfecting his pirates of the Caribbean look, a well known character in Toll cross, Hoochie Coochie is the 'go to' shop for that night out outfit with a difference. Walking past the breathtaking gothic Barkleys church (photo opportunity) next door is Hendricks bar who serve great gins bust also do the best nachos in town! Walking past Bruntsfield links which is also a popular park for locals to relax and enjoy the sunshine Bollywood coffee a Bruntsfield institution which serves great home cooked Indian currys on the go for only £6, many bring a rug along to sit in the Links and enjoy the view of Edinburgh. Further along Bruntsfield is one of my most favourite boullangeries la Barantine this modest tiny cream and wooden shop inside offers a taste of traditional France. Their charcutterie platter for lunch is delicious followed by their own home made macaroons are a must. Opposite here is Montpilliers a trendy bar/ Bistro with a lively atmosphere. They offer great lunch time food deals. In Morningside my first stop off point has to be Lucas ice cream shop. S.Lucas is famous in Edinburgh and everyone born and bread in Edinburgh has some memories as a child going to Lucas for a cone in the summer holidays. The Dominion cinema is tucked away on the left of Morningside Road. This cinema was opened in 1938 and still maintains its charm, with an art-deco style thought and comfortable sofas rather than uncomfortable cinema seats this is a must do whilst in Edinburgh. My final stop in Morningside would be The Canny Mans pub established in 1871 and family run for generations famous for their hangover cure bloody marys its is pub experience like no other. The perfect Place to stay is located a stones throw from all of these wonderful places. The Four Sisters Boatel is a hidden gem in Edinburgh and an alternative to the mainstream accommodation offered. We are located in the city centre a luxury 4 star self catering boatel accommodation. Peacefully floating in the Lochrin Basin in The Union Canal. you have your own floating apartment in a peaceful location.
